Ellie grew up in a seaside village in South Wales, surrounded by sheep, Welsh cakes, and heaps of encouragement to read stories and draw. In 2011, she graduated from UWE, Bristol, with a first class honours degree in Drawing & Applied Arts. It was here that she became fascinated with traditional printmaking methods and classic illustration, which in turn lead to a rediscovery of the wonderful world of children’s book illustration.
Ellie says: “I felt like there was so much more to learn and become excited by in children’s books, and so I packed up my pencils and paints and moved to Cambridge to study for the MA in Children’s Book Illustration where I’ve learned more than I would’ve thought possible! I particularly love exploring the boundaries of reality and the imaginary within the natural world, using animals to create characters that children can relate to and feel right at home with.”
Ellie is currently working on The Jasmine Green Series, published by Nosy Crow. Written by Helen Peters, these charming books follow the adventures of a young girl and her farmyard friends, and are illustrated throughout by Ellie. The first book in the series, A Piglet Called Truffle published in 2016, and was soon followed by A Duckling Called Button in early 2017. The third book in the series, where we get to meet A Sheepdog Called Skye, is out in June 2017!
Ellie mostly works in watercolour, pencil and pen and ink. Her work was highly commended in the Macmillan Prize for Children’s Picture Book Illustration. She lives in London.
