We are delighted to announce the world-rights acquisition of a ground breaking project from picture book giant Oliver Jeffers and fine artist Sam Winston – long-time friends and first-time collaborators. A Child of Books is set to publish simultaneously in the UK, US and Australia in Autumn 2016.
Together, Oliver and Sam say that
“From the very beginning we both wanted to create a tale that celebrated our own love of classic children’s literature with an added a modern twist. For us it was about capturing some of the magic that happens when you first get lost in a timeless story, but doing it in a way that readers haven’t seen before. With Walker’s wonderful support and encouragement we think we have achieved that.”
Jeffers’s elegant images combined with Winston’s astonishing typographical landscapes – beautifully shaped from excerpts of children’s classics and lullabies – encourage readers of all ages to have an immersive and unforgettable reading experience that they will want to pass on to others.
Deirdre McDermott, Walker Books picture book publisher, is thrilled with the acquisition saying;
“I’ve worked a little bit with Oliver Jeffers before and we had a real fine time together, so to have now collaborated on an original picture book with Oliver – and with his friend Sam, too – makes me feel creatively giddy. It’s so rare to have a picture book both written and illustrated by two artists: it’s a first for Oliver, a first for Sam, and a first for Walker Books, too!”
This inspiring and lyrical tale is a tribute to all that books can do and all that books can become; A Child of Books is a timely manifesto for the myriad rewards of reading and sharing the enjoyment of stories.
