Bethan could never decide which she loved more – words or pictures. So she chose a career that squashed the two together. After studying for a BA in English literature, Bethan went on to complete her MA in Children’s Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art, where she graduated in 2019 with a Distinction.
Bethan’s final university project was highly commended in the Macmillan Prize 2019, and her debut as an author-illustrator, The Grumpy Fairies, was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books in August 2020. In July 2021, The Grumpy Fairies won the Waterstones Children Book Prize 2021’s best-illustrated category. Bethan’s second book, A Damsel Not In Distress! published with Frances Lincoln Children’s Books in April 2023. Her latest book, The Not-So-Wicked Witch, was published in September 2024.
Bethan works with a combination of watercolour, gouache and coloured pencil and enjoys finding her way into a story through the characters that appear in the pages of her sketchbook. When she’s not illustrating, Bethan works in a library and enjoys eating her way around the best bakeries in London.
