Paula Metcalf studied at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, graduating with a BA Hons in Illustration and French (First Class) and an MA in Children’s Book Illustration (Distinction). In 2007, she was the first illustrator-in-residence at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, and since 2008 she has been a visiting lecturer on the highly-regarded Children’s Book Illustration MA at ARU Cambridge.
As author-illustrator, Paula has created a number of picture books with Macmillan, including Norma Snows and Mabel’s Magical Garden. As author, she has also been paired with illustrator Cally Johnson-Isaacs for the terrific Rabbits Don’t Lay Eggs and Charlie Crow in the Snow.
As illustrator she most recently illustrated the enchanting Nothing can Frighten a Bear by Elizabeth Dale, which was published by Nosy Crow in September 2016. Her most recent book as author-illustrator, The Perfect Guest, was published by Walker in February 2017.
Paula loves being an illustrator because drawing and writing make her happier than nearly anything else she can think of. She also gets to spend all day with her dog, Walter, who often tries to sneak onto her lap while she’s working.
